There was atmosphere aplenty, riding above all on the consummate acting of Beca Davies.

Beca Davies, one of Welsh National Opera’s Associate Artists 23/24, is a mezzo-soprano from West Wales.

Beca made her WNO debut as one of the Niñas in Goljov's Ainadamar, and continued into the 23/24 seasons singing Beggar Woman in Death in Venice and Conversa Seconda in Suor Angelica. She was the mezzo-soprano soloist for WNO’s Viennese Concerts, their touring Schools Concerts, and their Carmen: Come and Sing performance-workshop for Hay on Wye Festival. She also gave recitals in which her own arrangements of Welsh folk songs were performed. Next year, she will return to WNO as the mezzo-soprano soloist for Play Opera LIVE 2026 and as cover Branwen in Blaze of Glory

Praised for her 'razor-edged vocal clarity and agility’, she has created many roles for world premieres including A in Inevitable by Carmel Smicksgill and Josh Iverton for Buxton International Festival, Fflei in Bwci Be?! by Claire Victoria Roberts and Gwyneth Glyn/Patrick Young, Meinir in Cyfrinach y Brenin by Mared Emlyn - both for Opra Cymru, the title role in Helena by Marco Glavani at the Cockpit Theatre London, and Miss Bourne/Julia in The Ghost Train for St Magnus International Festival.

Beca is also a keen theare-maker and was the librettist for a new micro opera called G_ _ _ _ _ _ alongside composer Sarah Lianne Lewis for Ty Cerdd’s CoDi 24/25 scheme in association with Music Theatre Wales. She also wrote the script for The Secret City, a narrative-through-music piece for Brixton Chamber Orchestra’s family day concert at Brixton Windmill Education Centre.

Beca is an alumna of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and King’s College London, where she attained a first-class honours degree in Music.
